Dragon Warrior came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986, developed and published by Enix. It was one of the first major console RPGs in the west, a time when most games were about quick reflexes and high scores, not story and exploration.

You control the descendant of a legendary hero, tasked with defeating the dragonlord and rescuing Princess Gwaelin. The game plays out on a top-down world map and in first-person dungeons. You explore the land screen by screen, fighting random monster encounters in turn-based combat, slowly building your strength and gold to buy better equipment. The pacing is deliberate, even slow, with a lot of grinding required to survive the later areas. It feels like a quiet, personal journey where every small victory is earned.
