Game Overview

Okay, so Dragon Warrior on NES is basically where Japanese RPGs as we know them started. You play as this knight who shows up claiming to be the descendant of some legendary hero, and of course the king immediately dumps the whole "save the princess, kill the dragon guy" quest on you. Classic setup, but back in 1986 this was mind-blowing.

What's cool is how open the world feels at first—you can technically wander anywhere, but good luck surviving more than two steps north of the starting town before some slime murders you. The grind is real, but in that satisfying way where you slowly watch your guy get strong enough to explore new areas. Combat's simple turn-based stuff—attack, cast a spell (if you've got the MP), or pray you can run away. No fancy party members here, just you versus everything.

Pro tip: Talk to everyone in towns. The NPCs actually give useful hints about where to go next, which you'll need because the game doesn't hold your hand. And save constantly by talking to the king—those random battles add up fast.
