Game Overview

Dragon Warrior II on NES is where the series really starts throwing punches. You begin as the lone warrior prince of Midenhall, getting the news that Moonbrooke got wrecked by Hargon’s forces—and suddenly you’re off to rally your cousins before the world burns. No pressure.

Fair warning: this one’s brutal. Even the remakes don’t soften the blows much. You’ll spend the first hour or so just grinding herbs and praying at inns because your warrior can’t even cast a basic heal spell. Eventually, you’ll pick up your cousins—the Prince of Cannock (decent at buffs, dies if you sneeze at him) and the Princess of Moonbrooke (glass cannon with killer magic).

What makes it tough? Everything. Dungeons love dead-ends, enemies hit like trucks, and you’ll wipe a lot before figuring out the rhythm. But there’s something satisfying about finally cracking its code—like beating a boss after three failed attempts and realizing you just out-stubborned one of the hardest JRPGs ever made.
