Dragon Wars (Proto) is one of those NES RPGs that starts with you getting thrown in jail for no good reason—classic. Turns out King Drake banned magic, and now the whole world’s about to go up in flames (literally, thanks to some very angry dragons). You and your crew bust out, grab whatever weapons you can find, and start plotting revenge while dodging guards and figuring out who to trust.

The combat’s simple but satisfying—swords, spells, the usual—but the real fun is watching the story unfold as you hop between islands, recruiting allies who hate the king as much as you do. Just don’t expect everything to go smoothly. Half the time, you’re one bad decision away from a dragon setting your plans on fire.
