Game Overview

Etrian Odyssey III is one of those games that makes you feel like a real explorer—if explorers carried graph paper and fought giant jellyfish. You start in Armoroad, a half-sunken city where adventurers gather before diving into sprawling, maze-like dungeons. The twist? You draw the map yourself on the DS touchscreen as you go, marking traps, shortcuts, and those weird glowing spots you swear weren’t there before.

Combat’s turn-based but snappy, with your party of five facing off against monsters on the top screen while your scribbled map stays visible below. The class system’s wild—you’ve got pirates tossing grenades, zodiac mages calling down meteors, and farmers who… well, mostly just harvest herbs until they accidentally become useful. Skill trees are deep enough that my first party ended up hilariously unbalanced (note: don’t ignore the healer).

Between dungeon dives, you’ll upgrade gear at the blacksmith, pick up odd jobs at the bar, and even sail to uncharted islands. Just remember to save often—those one-slot saves and brutal difficulty spikes mean every decision matters. It’s the kind of game where getting lost is half the fun.
