Game Overview

Gauntlet 4 came out for the Sega Genesis in 1993, developed by Tengen and published by Sega. It was part of that wave of mid-90s console games that tried to bring deeper arcade experiences home, offering a more structured take on the series compared to its endless quarter-munching ancestors.

You choose from the classic quartet—Warrior, Valkyrie, Wizard, or Elf—and guide them through discrete, multi-floor dungeons filled with generators, ghosts, and treasure. The main goal is to clear each room of enemies, find the exit, and eventually defeat the level boss. Key mechanics include managing limited keys to open doors, collecting food to stay alive, and actually gaining experience to increase your stats between stages, a first for the series. The pacing is deliberate, almost tense, as you ration health and plan routes while monsters respawn endlessly. It feels like a careful, strategic grind where every potion and bomb matters.
