Game Overview

Gauntlet came out on MS-DOS in 1985, part of that wave of arcade ports that defined the era. Atari Games handled the release, bringing the quarter munching arcade experience home, where you could play without feeding a machine all your allowance. It was a straightforward dungeon crawl, but it stood out because you could play with friends, something not every game offered back then.

You pick one of four characters: Warrior, Valkyrie, Wizard, or Elf, each with different strengths in close combat or magic. Your goal is to survive maze like levels, find the exit, and move on while fending off endless waves of ghosts, grunts, and demons. Key mechanics include managing your constantly decreasing health, grabbing food to stay alive, and destroying monster generators to slow the onslaught. The game is relentless; enemies spawn continuously, and the pace forces you to keep moving. It feels chaotic and tense, especially when your health is low and that digitized voice warns, "warrior needs food badly".

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
