Godzilla Unleashed: Double Smash came out for the Nintendo DS in 2007, published by Atari. It was one of those mid-2000s handheld games that tried to make use of the dual screens in a pretty direct way, putting the action on both at once. It fit right in with a lot of the experimental, sometimes clunky titles from that era of the DS library.

You control one of two monsters, fighting another pair across two connected battlefields. The main goal is to defeat your opponents by depleting their health bars, all while demolishing the cityscapes that fill each screen. Signature mechanics include switching your focus between the top and bottom screens to attack or avoid hazards, and using special moves like atomic breath or wing gusts that often affect both areas. The pacing is frantic, as you have to manage threats from above and below simultaneously, which can make it feel unfair at times. It ultimately feels like a messy, chaotic brawl that captures the scale of a monster fight even if the execution is rough.
