Game Overview

Golden Axe throws you right into a rough, medieval fantasy brawl where you pick one of three warriors and start hacking your way through hordes of enemies. You’ve got a beefy barbarian with a huge sword, a grumpy dwarf swinging an oversized axe, and a fierce amazon who’s just as deadly as she looks. Each one feels a bit different to control, so the first few minutes are usually spent figuring out which style clicks with you.

The stages are basically one long push toward Death Adder, the big bad who stole the Golden Axe and kidnapped the king and princess. You’re not just fighting armored thugs, sometimes you knock enemies off weird mounts like fire-breathing dragons or these odd, tail-whipping lizard things, then ride them yourself for some extra chaos. Every now and then, little blue gnome-looking creatures scurry onto the screen, and you can kick them to shake loose magic potions. Save enough and you can unleash some ridiculous screen-filling spells. There are green ones too, and those are basically your mobile lunchboxes, dropping food to heal you mid-battle.

It’s fast, scrappy, and kind of messy in the best way. Sometimes I’d get on a mount only to be knocked off three seconds later and just sit there mashing buttons in frustration. Other times, I’d land a perfect fire-breath on a crowd and feel like an absolute hero. It’s that back-and-forth chaos that keeps it from feeling too stale in the moment.

But it’s not perfect. Some spots feel way harder than the rest, and after a while you realize you’re mostly just walking left to right and smacking whatever pops up. Still, I can’t pretend it’s not fun. There’s something about hopping on a dragon, letting it breathe fire across half the screen, and watching enemies scatter that just sticks with you. For all its rough edges, Golden Axe is one of those arcade games that gets under your skin. You fire it up, and suddenly an hour’s gone before you even think about stopping.
