Game Overview

Golden Axe, released by Sega in 1989 and playable via MAME 0.243, is a side-scrolling arcade brawler from an era when local multiplayer meant crowding around a cabinet with a pocketful of quarters. It fits right in with other late-80s beat 'em ups, offering a straightforward fantasy setting without much pretense.

You choose one of three characters, a barbarian, an amazon, or a dwarf, and hack your way through screen after screen of enemy soldiers, skeletons, and boss monsters. The main goal is to rescue the king and princess from the villain Death Adder, accomplished by clearing each stage of foes. Key mechanics include attacking with your weapon, using magic spells that drain collected magic potions (stolen from little gnome-like thieves who scurry across the screen), and even mounting creatures like fire-breathing dragons or chicken-legged beasts that you can ride temporarily. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty can feel punishing if you try to go it alone; enemies gang up quickly, and your health depletes fast. It feels chaotic and a little stiff by today's standards, but there's a raw, immediate satisfaction in landing a heavy hit and watching enemies fly backward.
