Game Overview

Golden Axe on MAME is that old-school arcade brawler where you hack and slash your way through hordes of enemies to save a kidnapped king. You pick between three warriors—I always go for the dwarf because he’s stubby but hits like a truck. The magic system’s simple but satisfying: collect potions from little thief guys who scamper across the screen, then unleash screen-clearing spells when things get messy.

It’s one of those games where the controls feel stiff by today’s standards, but there’s something weirdly addictive about riding lizard monsters and kicking enemies off cliffs. The Mega-Tech version plays almost identical to the original, just with a slightly different intro. Grab a friend for co-op if you can—it’s way more fun when you’re both spamming attacks and accidentally hitting each other.

Don’t expect deep combat, but for a quick nostalgia trip, it still holds up.
