Game Overview

High Stakes is one of those old-school DOS games that feels like stepping into a Dick Francis novel—because, well, it literally is. You play as Steven Scott, a toymaker who also owns racehorses, which sounds like a fun life until your trainer and a bookmaker decide to screw you over. Next thing you know, you're drugged, beaten, and your best horse, Energise, gets stolen to race under a fake name. Classic.

It’s less about personal drama (unlike some of Francis’ other stuff) and more about straight-up unraveling the mess. You’ll poke around stables, talk to shady characters, and try to outsmart the people who think they’ve outsmarted you. The writing’s solid, and if you’re into horse racing or old detective vibes, it’s got that in spades. Just don’t expect flashy graphics—this is pure late-’80s text adventure territory.

Honestly, it’s a niche pick, but if you like your mysteries with a side of hoofbeats, it’s worth digging up.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
