Game Overview

Ikari Warriors came out on the NES in 1988, published by SNK. It was part of that wave of arcade-style shooters that felt a bit more serious than some of the cartoonier platformers of the time. You got two players, a lot of jungle, and a constant stream of enemies to deal with.

You control one of two commandos, moving upward through each stage, shooting soldiers and avoiding grenades. Your main goal is to rescue a captured ally deep in enemy territory. The game uses a unique rotary joystick style control for aiming your shots independently of your movement, which was unusual for the NES. You also get to hop into vehicles like tanks and helicopters, which offer powerful firepower but are easily destroyed. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is steep, with limited continues. It feels like a tense, chaotic push through hostile territory where every inch of progress is earned.
