Game Overview
Illusion of Time (or Illusion of Gaia, depending on where you played it) is one of those SNES RPGs that sticks with you. You play as Will, a kid with weird psychic powers, traveling through ancient ruins and fighting monsters to stop a comet from wrecking the planet. The combat’s simple but satisfying—you’ve got this dash attack that feels great when you nail the timing—and the locations are surprisingly eerie for a 16-bit game. Temples feel forgotten, towns have this quiet sadness, and the music? Haunting in the best way.
It’s not all doom and gloom though. There’s a weird charm to the side characters, like the guy who just really loves turnips, or the dolphin you befriend early on. The puzzles mix action and light platforming, and some later areas get legitimately tough. Just don’t expect a typical RPG—there’s no leveling up, just health upgrades hidden in odd corners. It’s short but memorable, and that ending still hits hard decades later.
