Game Overview

Konami and Mirrorsoft released J.R.R. Tolkien’s Riders of Rohan for MS-DOS in 1991, a time when strategy and action games were finding their footing on home computers. It stands as an early attempt to blend tactical overworld planning with direct, real time combat, placing you right in the middle of the conflicts Tolkien described.

You command groups of Rohirrim soldiers on a strategic map, moving them to defend villages and key locations from encroaching enemies. When battle is joined, the perspective shifts to a side scrolling action sequence where you control a single rider, using sword strikes and bow shots to cut down orcs and other foes. The game requires you to constantly switch between managing your forces broadly and diving into the immediate chaos of melee, creating a tense back and forth that keeps you alert. It feels demanding and a little unwieldy at times, but successfully capturing a fort or turning back an assault delivers a genuine sense of hard won accomplishment.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
