War in Middle Earth came out in 1988 for MS-DOS, developed by Synergistic Software. It was one of those ambitious strategy titles from the era that tried to capture the scale of Tolkien's world on a home computer, a time when complex games often meant wrestling with keyboard commands and parsing dense interfaces rather than enjoying slick visuals.

You control the entire Fellowship and the armies of the Free Peoples, moving characters and units across a strategic map of Middle-earth. Your main goal is to protect Frodo long enough for him to destroy the Ring in Mount Doom, all while managing invasions and fending off Sauron's forces. Key mechanics include moving heroes to recruit armies, engaging in tactical combat on separate battle screens, and constantly monitoring the Ring-bearer's progress and corruption. The pacing is deliberate, almost tense; a single misstep can lead to a swift defeat. It feels like conducting a desperate, sprawling war where every decision carries weight.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
