King & Balloon came out in 1980 as an arcade game from Namco. It was part of that early wave of shooters where the action was simple but the tension was real. You don't see many games like it anymore, but back then it had a clear, weird charm that stood out even among other cabinets.

You control a soldier on the ground with a crossbow, shooting down balloons that descend from the top of the screen. Each one carries a grinning enemy trying to abduct the king, who floats helplessly in the background shouting "Help!" every time one gets close. The main goal is to clear each wave of 42 balloons before too many escape off the top with the king in tow. You have to be quick and accurate; missing shots or letting balloons slip past quickly raises the stakes. The pacing starts manageable but soon becomes frantic, especially when special balloons that take multiple hits or move unpredictably show up. It feels like a race against silly, smiling disaster.
