Game Overview

Kingdom Crusade came out for the Game Boy in 1991, published by Electro Brain. It was one of those games that tried to blend a couple of different genres on a system already packed with straightforward platformers and action titles. You don't see many hybrids like it from that era, games that ask you to think on two completely different levels.

You control a king leading his army across a large, chessboard-like map of a kingdom. The main goal is to conquer every enemy castle to reunite the land. On the strategic map, you move your units one space at a time to surround and engage enemy forces. When your unit lands on an enemy, the perspective shifts to an overhead action scene where you directly control your knight. You fight with a sword, clearing out all the enemies on that screen to claim the territory. The pacing is deliberate; a wrong move on the map can leave you vulnerable, and the action sequences demand quick reflexes. It feels like a constant, satisfying tug-of-war between careful planning and frantic combat.
