Game Overview

Kingdom Crusade on Game Boy is this weird little gem where you play as Prince Valiant—yeah, the guy from the old comics—leading King Arthur’s armies against some tyrant named Cynan. The whole thing plays out on this big chessboard-style map where you’re constantly fighting over tiles, pushing forward, then watching the enemy take them right back when you’re not looking.

When you move into a tile with enemies, it switches to this top-down Zelda-like brawl where you’re dodging swings and trying to land hits. Different units have their own attacks, and grabbing power-ups mid-battle actually feels clutch—like finding a speed boost just as you’re about to get cornered. Castles are the real pain, though; you’ve gotta clear not just the tile but all the surrounding ones too.

What’s cool is you can tweak the map size to make the war shorter or longer, and the AI’s not bad—Cynan actually fights smarter on higher difficulties instead of just sponging hits. Oh, and there’s two-player if you’ve got a friend who’s into retro turf wars. Just don’t expect them to go easy on you.
