Laser Blast came out for the Atari 2600 in 1981, published by Activision. It was one of those straightforward shooters that filled out the library back then, not trying to do too much, just giving you a clear task and a joystick. You controlled a small ship from a top down view, hovering over a barren landscape that scrolled slowly upward.

Your goal was simple: destroy every enemy tank that appeared on screen before they could shoot you down. You fired lasers downward, aiming carefully as the tanks moved in predictable but increasingly rapid patterns. If an enemy laser hit you, your ship would spiral out of control; you had a brief moment to steer it into a tank for a kamikaze kill before you crashed. The pace picked up quickly, and the screen could get crowded in a hurry. It feels tense and immediate, a pure test of reflexes and aim.
