Play Links: The Challenge of Golf Online

You squint at the wind gauge, adjust your stance, then watch your ball hook left into the rough—just like real golf. The greens punish lazy putts, and every club choice actually matters.

Game Overview

Links: The Challenge of Golf came out in 1989 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, developed by Access Software. It was one of the more serious golf simulations available on PC at the time, offering a detailed take on the sport when many other options were simpler or more arcade-like. The game didn't rely on flashy graphics; it focused on delivering a solid, thoughtful round of golf right on your desktop.

You control a golfer through a full 18 holes, making every decision from club selection to shot alignment. The main objective is to shoot the lowest score possible by navigating fairways, avoiding hazards, and reading the greens accurately. Signature mechanics include adjusting for wind speed and direction, judging elevation changes on the course, and carefully managing the power and accuracy of each swing. The pacing is deliberate, almost meditative; you take your time because rushed shots usually lead to trouble. It feels like a genuine test of patience and skill, where every shot demands your full attention.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
