Game Overview

Maze Wars came out in 1987 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection, developed by Greg Thompson. It was a port of a much older concept, but on the PC it felt raw and immediate, a glimpse into what competitive play could be before the idea was common. You navigated a stark, monochrome world of vector lines, a digital labyrinth that felt both simple and strangely vast.

You control a small, crosshair-like avatar, moving through the maze one grid at a time, hunting other players or AI-controlled eyeball robots. The main objective is straightforward: find and shoot the opponents before they shoot you. Signature mechanics include peeking around corners in first-person, a limited field of view that makes every intersection tense, and the ability to move forward, backward, and strafe side to side for tactical positioning. The pacing is methodical, almost cautious; you learn to listen for footsteps and gunshots echoing in the narrow halls. It feels like a tense game of hide and seek where every decision matters.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
