MechAssault: Phantom War came out for the Nintendo DS in 2006, developed by Backbone Entertainment and published by Majesco. You pilot a heavily armed BattleMech, moving through urban and industrial environments to complete mission objectives like destroying enemy bases or defending allies. The touch screen handles weapon selection and targeting; you drag a stylus to aim your crosshairs, which gives a tangible sense of control over your volleys of missiles and cannon fire. Missions are linear and often hectic, with a steady stream of enemy mechs and tanks to dismantle. The game moves at a brisk pace, and while it isn't brutally difficult, it keeps you alert with constant threats from all sides. Blasting apart enemy armor with precise touch controls makes each encounter feel deliberate and destructive.
