Monster Tale came out for the Nintendo DS in 2011, developed by DreamRift. It was a time when the DS library was full of inventive takes on classic genres, and this one stood out as a solid action platformer with a clever twist.
You control a girl named Ellie, exploring a labyrinthine world screen by screen, using a whip-like chain to attack enemies. Your main goal is to rescue captured kids while nurturing a pet monster called Chomp on the lower touch screen. Chomp eats defeated enemies to grow, and you can evolve him into different forms that help solve environmental puzzles or assist in combat. The pacing is deliberate, with some backtracking as Chomp gains new abilities. It feels like managing a partnership where both of you are constantly learning and adapting.
