New Super Mario Bros. on the DS feels like slipping into a pair of well-worn sneakers—familiar but still full of surprises. You’ve got your classic side-scrolling jumps, goomba stomps, and fire flowers, but the levels twist and turn in ways that keep you on your toes. The first time I hit a giant mushroom and Mario ballooned up, smashing through blocks like they were paper, I couldn’t stop grinning.
The touchscreen stuff is subtle—mostly just for minigames or storing power-ups—so it doesn’t get in the way of the pure platforming. And yeah, the graphics are simple, but there’s something charming about how punchy the colors are, especially when you’re racing against the clock in those auto-scrolling airship levels. Just don’t get too comfortable—some of those later worlds will humble you real quick.
