Game Overview

New Year's Mystery was part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection, a release that bundled several titles from the early 1990s. It was developed by a small team whose name doesn't stand out today, but the game fits right in with the era's point-and-click adventure style. You explore a detailed, static environment with that particular low-resolution charm, clicking through pre-rendered scenes and interacting with objects in a way that feels both simple and deliberate.

You control a character who wakes up in a large, snowbound mansion with no memory of how they got there. Your goal is to uncover the reason for your presence and escape before the clock strikes midnight. The gameplay involves screen-by-screen exploration, collecting items, and solving environmental puzzles by combining objects or using them in specific locations. You also converse with other guests in the mansion, each with their own cryptic dialogue, and avoid a roaming ghost that can end your progress if it catches you. The pacing is slow and thoughtful, with a high difficulty stemming from obscure puzzle solutions and the constant time pressure. It feels like a tense, methodical race against an unseen clock, where every decision matters.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
