Game Overview

Night Driver came out for the Atari 2600 in 1978, published by Atari themselves. It was one of the early first-person driving games, a simple but effective concept that fit right in with the straightforward, hardware-pushing spirit of the platform at the time. You didn't get much visual detail back then, but the idea was clear: you were driving a car at night, and that was enough to pull you in.

You control a car from a first-person perspective, seeing only the road ahead as illuminated by your headlights. The main objective is to avoid crashing into the barriers lining the roadside or the other cars that suddenly appear in your lane. The signature mechanics involve judging turns based on the sparse roadside markers and reacting quickly to oncoming traffic with no warning. The pacing is relentless; the longer you survive, the faster it gets, and the narrower the road becomes. It feels like a tense battle against your own reflexes and the limited visual information the game gives you.
