Game Overview

Panic Bomber came out on the Neo Geo in 1994, developed by Hudson Soft and published by SNK. It was a time when the Neo Geo was home to a lot of fighting games and arcade shooters, so a competitive puzzle game like this stood out for being a little different. It didn't try to be the flashiest game on the system, but it had a certain charm and a very specific kind of appeal.

You control Bomberman, dropping colored bombs onto a grid from the top of the screen. The main goal is to match three or more bombs of the same color to clear them and send garbage blocks over to your opponent's side. The signature mechanics involve setting off chain reactions; a big combo can wipe out a huge chunk of your own board and flood the other player with obstacles. The pacing is fast and the difficulty ramps up quickly, especially against another person. It feels frantic and a little silly, like you're trying to manage your own impending disaster while hoping to cause a bigger one for someone else.
