Pokémon Dark Rising II is one of those ROM hacks that makes you question whether you ever actually knew how to play Pokémon. Right from the start, the rival battle hits like a truck—none of that "here’s a weak starter to ease you in" nonsense. Your poor Treecko or whatever you picked gets wrecked if you don’t grind a little first.

The story’s surprisingly intense for a GBA game, with actual stakes and some legit creepy moments (wait till you meet the villain’s team). And the Pokémon selection? Wild. You’ll run into stuff from later gens mixed in with the classics, plus Mega Evolutions that somehow got crammed into the old-school sprites. It’s chaotic in the best way.

Just don’t expect to coast through. Gym leaders have full teams with actual strategy, and random trainers will wipe you if you’re careless. But when you finally beat that one obnoxious double battle after six tries? Feels better than anything in the official games.
