Pokémon Black for the DS still holds up as one of the best in the series. You start off in Unova with your usual pick of starters—Tepig, Oshawott, or Snivy—but things get interesting fast with the animated sprites and a region that actually feels fresh. The battles are snappy, and the new Pokémon designs? Way better than people give them credit for.

What I love is how the story actually tries something different—Team Plasma’s whole "liberate Pokémon" angle makes you think a little, even if they’re still just villains in the end. And the seasons changing every real-world month? Such a cool touch that actually affects what you can find in the wild.

If you’ve only played the newer 3D games, this one’s worth revisiting just for the pixel-art charm and tighter pacing. Still my go-to when I want that classic Pokémon feel without the hand-holding.
