Pokemon Orchid is a Game Boy Advance game from 2004, developed by a small team called Lunar Dew. It came out late in the system's life, when players were already looking ahead to the DS, but it found a dedicated audience. You play as a new trainer in the Aethel region, a place filled with winding forests and misty caves.

You control your trainer from a top-down perspective, walking through tall grass to find wild Pokemon and challenging other trainers to turn-based battles. Your main goal is to collect eight gym badges and defeat the Elite Four, but the rival character ambushes you at the worst moments with a team that adapts to yours. Signature mechanics include the ability to rebattle gym leaders for better rewards and a day/night cycle that affects which Pokemon appear. The pacing is brisk, though the post-game legendary hunt is way trickier than it looks. The new Pokemon blend in so well you’ll forget they’re fan-made. It feels like rediscovering an old favorite with a few surprising twists.
