I remember wandering into a forest early on and running into a wild Absol, which was a nice surprise. The difficulty curve is steeper than the main series, so random trainers can actually wipe your team if you're not careful. It makes grinding feel less tedious since you have to think about movesets and type matchups more.

The story has some interesting twists, though it still follows the classic "become the champion" path. Pokemon Phoenix Rising does enough to stand out without losing what makes these games fun.
