Pokemon R.O.W.E. is one of those rom hacks that feels like a fresh take on the classic formula. The early game throws you right into it - no long tutorials, just picking your starter and heading out into Hoenn, but with way more freedom than usual. You can tackle gyms in any order, which changes up the pacing in a good way.

I remember wandering into a higher-level area by accident early on, getting wrecked by wild Pokemon, then coming back later when my team was stronger. The open structure makes exploration actually matter. The battles feel familiar but tweaked - some moves are rebalanced, and the AI doesn't just spam the same attack over and over.

It's still a GBA game at heart, so don't expect modern quality-of-life stuff, but for a rom hack, Pokemon R.O.W.E. does a solid job of mixing nostalgia with some smart changes.
