Pokemon Rouge Feu is one of those GBA rom hacks that feels familiar but still keeps you hooked. You start in a slightly tweaked version of the usual Pokemon world, with the same core loop of catching and battling, but some of the trainer fights actually make you think instead of just spamming your strongest move.

I remember getting stuck early on against a gym leader who kept countering my team—had to go back and grind a bit, which was annoying, but it made the eventual win more satisfying. The game doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but if you’ve played the originals too many times, Pokemon Rouge Feu gives you just enough changes to feel fresh.

It’s still a GBA-era Pokemon game at heart, just with a few rough edges smoothed out.
