Pokemon Rubino (I) feels like coming back to an old friend. The Hoenn region is familiar but still full of little surprises, like running into a wild Shroomish when you least expect it. The early game is slow, though—you spend a lot of time grinding against Poochyenas before you can take on the first gym.

I remember getting stuck near Dewford Town because my team wasn't balanced enough. Had to backtrack to catch a Makuhita just to stand a chance against Brawly's fighting types. The game doesn't hold your hand, which makes victories feel earned.

It's still one of those GBA roms that holds up if you're into the classic Pokemon formula. Just be ready for some dated mechanics and a lot of random encounters.
