Pokémon White on the DS still holds up as one of the best in the series. You start in Unova, this time with all-new Pokémon—no old favorites at first, which actually makes it feel fresh. The story’s got more depth than usual, with Team Plasma causing trouble while pretending to be do-gooders. Battles are snappy, and the animated sprites give your team way more personality than the static images from older games.

What really stuck with me was the post-game—there’s a whole extra area that completely changes up the map. And yeah, you’ll finally run into some classic Pokémon there if you miss them. The music’s great too, especially the battle themes. It’s a solid pick if you want a Pokémon game that tries something different without losing what makes the series fun.
