You start in your hometown, pick your starter (Tepig, Oshawott, or Snivy—I went with the fire pig and regretted nothing), and before long, you're sneaking through tall grass, dodging wild Pokémon or catching them if they look cool.

The battles are classic turn-based stuff, but the animated sprites give it way more energy than older games. And the story? Weirdly intense for Pokémon—there’s this whole thing about truth vs. ideals, plus a guy named N who’s… complicated. The cities feel huge, with bridges that stretch forever and a soundtrack that slaps. If you’ve ever wanted to fight a dragon in a subway station, this is your game.

It’s still Pokémon at heart, just with a darker coat of paint and some surprises.
