Pokemon Wish came out in 2018 for the Game Boy Advance, developed by fans under the name "Wish Team." It's a ROM hack of Pokemon FireRed, and it feels like a natural extension of that era, with the same sprite-based visuals and chiptune music that defined the platform's library.

You control a young trainer traveling across a new region, capturing wild Pokemon and raising them for turn-based battles. The main goal is to collect eight gym badges and challenge the Elite Four, but the game introduces several new mechanics, like a day and night cycle that affects which Pokemon appear, and an expanded roster of creatures from later generations. The pacing is brisk, with fewer roadblocks than the official games, but the battles can be surprisingly tough if you're under-leveled. It feels like rediscovering an old favorite with just enough new surprises to keep you engaged.
