Game Overview

Princess Crown is one of those Sega Saturn gems that never got enough love outside Japan. You play as Gradriel, a 13-year-old princess who’s suddenly thrust into saving her kingdom after her mother’s death—because apparently, demon cleanup duty wasn’t finished 25 years ago. Now her sisters are being possessed, and it’s up to this kid to fix everything. Classic RPG setup, but with way more kicking than you’d expect.

The game plays like a side-scrolling action RPG with fighting game mechanics mixed in. You’ll dash, block, and combo your way through enemies instead of just mashing an attack button. At first, I kept forgetting I could crouch to dodge, which… didn’t end well against the first boss. The sprite work is gorgeous, and the dialogue has that old-school charm where every villager has something weirdly specific to say about turnips or whatever.

It’s like if Ys III and a fighting game had a kid, then dressed it up in a gothic fairy tale. The combat takes some getting used to, but once it clicks, you’ll feel like a tiny, regal wrecking ball. Just watch out for those possessed sisters—they don’t pull punches.
