Game Overview

Puzzle Quest 2 came out on the Nintendo DS in 2010, developed by Infinite Interactive. It arrived late in the DS lifecycle, when the library was already packed with inventive titles, but it carved out its own space by blending genres in a way that felt perfectly suited to the handheld. You weren't just getting a puzzle game or an RPG; you were getting both at once, and the dual screens made managing the action surprisingly intuitive.

You control a custom hero exploring a fantasy world from an isometric view, moving screen by screen through towns and dungeons. The main objective is to complete quests and defeat a growing evil, but the real core of the game is its combat, which plays out on an 8x8 gem board. Matching skull gems deals direct damage to your enemy, while matching mana gems of different colors fuels your spells and special abilities. You also collect and upgrade equipment, like swords and bows, which modify your damage and provide new tactical options during the puzzle battles. The pacing is deliberate, with difficult boss fights that demand careful planning and a bit of luck with the board. It feels deeply strategic, where a single match can turn the tide of a fight you were sure to lose.
