Game Overview

Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords came out for the Nintendo DS in 2007, developed by Infinite Interactive. It arrived during a period when the handheld was full of experimental genre blends, and this one stood out by mashing up match-three puzzles with traditional role-playing mechanics. The game didn't try to reinvent the presentation; it just offered a solid, portable fantasy campaign.

You control a custom hero, traveling across a world map to complete quests, gain experience, and battle a variety of enemies. The core of the game happens on an eight-by-eight grid of gems; matching three or more of a color generates that type of mana, builds up your attack meter, or gives you gold. You spend that mana to cast spells from your learned repertoire, which can damage your opponent, steal their resources, or apply debilitating status effects. The main objective is to defeat enemy warlords by reducing their health to zero through these puzzle battles, all while managing your equipment, building a citadel, and even capturing monsters to learn their abilities. The pacing is deliberate, with a difficulty that steadily increases as you amass more complex spells and face smarter opponents. It feels like outthinking your foe on two levels at once, both tactically on the board and strategically with your loadout.
