Game Overview

Rainbow Island Revolution came out for the Nintendo DS in 2005, developed and published by Taito. It was part of that early wave of DS games that really tried to use both screens in a meaningful way, not just as an afterthought. It felt like a natural, if somewhat quirky, evolution of the classic Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Island lineage, but built specifically for the hardware.

You control a small character, either Bubby or a similar sprite, tasked with climbing a series of vertically scrolling stages. The main goal is to reach the top of each island by creating rainbows. You shoot colored beams from the bottom screen; these beams can be mixed to create new colors, bounced off mirrors to hit out-of-reach switches, and used to transform enemies or environmental objects like clouds into platforms. The top screen shows the upcoming section of the stage, letting you plan your next series of shots. The pacing is methodical, requiring you to think about color combinations and angles rather than react quickly. It feels like solving a light-based puzzle while gently climbing upward.
