Game Overview

I picked up The Ren & Stimpy Show: Fire Dogs for the Super Nintendo back in 1994, published by THQ. It was one of those licensed games that tried to capture the show's weird energy on the SNES, a system that had its share of platformers, both great and forgettable. This one definitely leaned into the bizarre, less concerned with polish and more with just being loud and chaotic, which honestly fit the source material.

You control both Ren and Stimpy, switching between them to tackle different obstacles. Ren uses a water hose to put out fires and can also attack enemies with it, while Stimpy carries a heavy axe to break down certain walls and objects. The main goal is to rescue cats from a burning building, moving screen by screen through multi-level stages. The pacing is frantic, with hazards like explosive cows and aggressive furniture appearing constantly, and the difficulty can feel unfair due to some awkward controls and hit detection. It feels like wrestling with a stubborn, silly cartoon that never quite does what you want it to.
