Rocketeer came out in 1995 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection, developed by Melbourne House. It was a time when flight sims and action games were pushing the limits of what PCs could handle, and this one tried to capture the feel of the film with mixed results. You get a sense of that era's ambition, even if the execution sometimes falls short.
You play as Cliff Secord, controlling his movements and the unreliable rocket pack across side-scrolling levels. The main goal is to navigate through cityscapes, avoid obstacles like buildings and enemy aircraft, and complete missions based on the movie's plot. Key mechanics include managing your thrust to stay airborne, dodging enemy fire, and engaging in simple combat. The pacing is frantic, and the difficulty can be unforgiving, with tight spaces and limited control making every mistake costly. It feels like wrestling with a wild machine just to stay in the air.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
