Game Overview

Shadow Knights came out in 1991 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection, developed by id Software before they became known for Wolfenstein and Doom. It was a time when action games were often built around simple, punishing mechanics, and this one fit right in with its dark fantasy setting and methodical pace.

You control a knight navigating a series of single-screen rooms, each one a self-contained combat puzzle or trap. Your main goal is to explore the dungeon, defeat enemies like skeletons and wraiths, and collect pieces of a mystical artifact to progress. Combat relies on timing your sword swings carefully; mistiming leaves you open, and health is scarce. There's no bow, no magic, just deliberate movement and attack decisions. The game is difficult, with no saves or checkpoints, so every room demands focus. It feels tense and isolating, with each cleared chamber bringing a small but real sense of relief.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
