Game Overview

Shiloh - Grant's Trial in the West was part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection, though I don't recall the developer offhand. It's a Civil War strategy title from the early 90s, a time when war games were often dense and required patience. You don't get flashy graphics or hand holding; it's just you, the map, and a lot of tough decisions.

You control Union forces under General Grant, maneuvering brigades and artillery across a detailed map of the Shiloh battlefield. The main goal is to hold your ground against Confederate assaults, managing supply lines and reinforcements under constant pressure. Key mechanics include positioning units in wooded or clear terrain for defensive bonuses, and timing counterattacks to exploit enemy weaknesses. The pacing is deliberate, almost tense; one misstep can leave a flank exposed or your artillery isolated. It feels like a genuine test of foresight and nerve, where every command carries weight.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
