Game Overview

Shutokou Racing on the Game Boy Color is one of those games that shouldn’t work as well as it does—tiny cars, tiny screen, but somehow it absolutely nails the feeling of late-night Tokyo highway racing. You’re swerving between trucks, squeezing past rivals, and trying not to wipe out on tight turns, all while the pixelated city lights blur past. The controls are surprisingly sharp for a GBC racer, and after a few races, you start nailing those drifts like a pro.

It’s got that perfect arcade vibe where you can just jump in, race, and immediately feel the rush. No complicated upgrades or menus—just pick a car (the heavier ones handle like boats, by the way) and go. The traffic AI is sneaky good too; they don’t just drive in predictable lines, so you’ll actually have to think about your passes. If you’ve ever wanted a portable OutRun but with more Tokyo highway chaos, this is it.

Honestly, it’s aged way better than it had any right to. Still holds up if you’re into retro racers.
