Tiny cars fly past way faster than they should on a Game Boy—you’re constantly balancing brake taps and tire wear while squeezing through Monaco’s hairpins. Feels shockingly alive for a pocket racer.

Game Overview

I picked up Nigel Mansell's World Championship Racing '92 on the Game Boy back when it came out, published by Gremlin Graphics. It was one of those handheld racers that tried to capture the feel of Formula 1 in an era where most portable games were simpler, more abstract experiences. You could tell they were pushing the hardware, even if the visuals were basic by today's standards.

You control Mansell's car through a full season of Grand Prix circuits, aiming to qualify well and win races. The game uses a behind-the-car perspective, and you have to manage your tires and fuel while hitting apexes and avoiding walls. The racing is methodical; you brake early, feather the throttle, and try not to spin out on tight corners. It feels tense and focused, especially when you're fighting for position in the final laps.
