Game Overview

Soccer on the Game Boy was released in 1990 by Nintendo, a straightforward adaptation of the sport for the handheld. It arrived early in the system's life, offering a portable option when most football games were confined to consoles. The visuals are simple, with small, blocky players on a green field, but it gets the job done without much fuss.

You control one player at a time, switching automatically to whoever is nearest the ball, with the goal of scoring more than your opponent. Passing and shooting are handled with two buttons, while a dedicated slide tackle lets you dispossess opponents, though it often leads to fouls. Matches are fast, with the ball bouncing unpredictably, and the difficulty ramps up noticeably against the computer. It feels satisfying to string a few passes together and slot one past the keeper, especially in two-player mode where things get properly chaotic.
