Play Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (Simon Wai Prototype) Online

This early Sonic 2 build feels like digging through a dev's abandoned sketches—weird springs fling you sideways, Tails glitches into walls, and Hidden Palace Zone barely works. The rough edges make it fascinating.

Game Overview

I first played the Simon Wai prototype of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the Sega Genesis in the early 90s, back when unfinished builds like this would sometimes circulate among players. Sega developed and published the game, and this particular version gives a raw look at how the final product was shaping up during that era. It feels less like a polished game and more like a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the development process.

You control Sonic, and sometimes Tails tags along, though his AI is often unreliable. The main goal is still to speed through levels, defeat Robotnik, and collect Chaos Emeralds. Signature mechanics include the Spin Dash, which lets you rev up and burst forward, and multi-path level designs that encourage exploration. The pacing is uneven, with some zones feeling nearly complete and others clearly unfinished or prone to crashes. Playing it feels like holding a blueprint; you see the potential, but you also trip over the scaffolding left behind.
