Special Forces came out in 1992 from MicroProse, a developer known for thoughtful strategy and simulation titles. It was part of that wave of early 90s MS-DOS games that leaned into realism and careful planning over pure action, a time when games were starting to ask more from players than just quick reflexes.
You control a squad of four soldiers, each with a unique specialty like demolitions or medic, and guide them through hostile territory one screen at a time. The main objective is to complete missions behind enemy lines, which involves careful movement, setting explosives, and rescuing hostages. Signature mechanics include managing your squad's limited ammunition and medkits, using stealth to avoid patrols, and positioning your men to cover angles before a firefight starts. The pacing is deliberate, almost tense, and the difficulty is unforgiving; a single mistake can get your entire team killed. It feels like a tense, methodical puzzle where every decision has weight.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
