Play Spider-Man 3 (SQUiRE) Online

Swing through a scaled-down NYC on the DS, using touch controls to sling webs between buildings—combat’s simple but landing those finishers on Sandman feels solid. Boss fights actually make smart use of both screens, even if some side missions drag.

Game Overview

Spider-Man 3 on the DS is one of those licensed games that actually gets it right. You start off swinging through a surprisingly decent-looking New York—for a DS game, anyway—and the controls feel pretty smooth once you get the hang of the touchscreen web-slinging. The city’s scaled down, obviously, but there’s still enough buildings to bounce between without feeling cramped.

Combat’s simple but satisfying, with basic combos and quick-time events for big finishers. Fights against guys like Sandman and Venom pop up between free-roaming sections, and the boss battles actually make decent use of the DS’s dual screens. It’s not perfect—some of the side missions get repetitive—but for a handheld Spidey game, it’s way better than it had any right to be.

If you’ve got a soft spot for the Raimi movies or just want a solid superhero game on the go, this one’s worth dusting off your DS for.
