SpongeBob & Friends: Battle for Volcano Island came out for the Nintendo DS in 2006, published by THQ. It was part of a wave of licensed platformers on the system, aiming squarely at younger fans of the show. The game doesn't try to reinvent the wheel; it just drops you right into Bikini Bottom's particular brand of chaos.
You control SpongeBob, Patrick, or Sandy, running through side-scrolling levels to stop Plankton's latest scheme. The main goal is to smash robot jellyfish, collect golden spatulas, and navigate environmental hazards like bubbling lava and collapsing platforms. Each character has a unique attack; SpongeBob uses his trusty spatula, Patrick belly flops, and Sandy swings a lasso. The levels are short and straightforward, with a difficulty that stays pretty forgiving, making it easy to pick up and play in short bursts. It feels like playing through a particularly silly, interactive episode of the cartoon.
